What is a CIFAS marker?
CIFAS is the UK's leading fraud prevention database. When a bank or lender suspects fraudulent activity on your account, they can place a marker against your name. This marker is visible to hundreds of financial institutions and can result in account closures, refused applications, and even difficulty getting basic banking services.
Why your accounts were closed
Banks typically close accounts immediately and without explanation when a CIFAS marker is applied. Their terms allow this, and they are under no obligation to discuss their reasons with you in detail.
Steps to challenge a CIFAS marker
- Submit a Subject Access Request (SAR): Write to CIFAS directly to find out exactly what marker has been registered and by which institution.
- Complain to the registering institution: You must complain directly to the bank that placed the marker, providing evidence that the suspicion was unfounded.
- Escalate to the Financial Ombudsman: If the institution refuses to remove the marker, the FOS can order its removal if they find it was applied unfairly.
Time is critical. The longer a CIFAS marker remains, the more damage it causes. Contact First Credit Advice immediately if you are affected — we can guide you through the dispute process.
